The Last Mile

One of my last assignments in the military was helping to get resources to our troops in the field. We found that it was easy to bring a full suite of digital tools to operational commands located on established forward operating bases but we struggled to bring these same tools to tactical units out in the field – we struggled to bring all of our resources that last mile to the people who needed them most.

Fast forward to today; I am tremendously proud of what our team is able to do for veterans in our community. In partnership with other non-profits, state, and federal agencies, we’re able to provide a remarkable amount of support to our veterans. To name just a few of our accomplishments, we’ve provided over $200,000 in financial assistance, and helped over 100 veterans get out of or avoid homelessness. We provide these services when no other resource is available, often time meeting a veteran in their home or in a place where they are comfortable.

In traveling around the state one of the things I’ve noticed is that we are struggling with the same issues I faced back when I was on active duty. Many of our resources are concentrated in our cities and towns but we’re still faced with the cost and challenge of delivering care to those who are unable to reach the care they need whether it be because of distance or disability.

I need your help.

On March 27th we’ll take to the airwaves for 12 hours to raise money to support Maine’s Veterans. I invite you to join us on Newsradio WGAN, and CBS affiliate WABI. Starting at 6AM, each hour will be packed with celebrity interviews and compelling stories from local veterans. By supporting our “Make 12 Hours Count” for Veterans Count programing you’ll show your commitment to deliver the resources our veterans need that last mile. The funds raised will support Maine’s veterans, service members and their families. All funds raised in Maine stay in Maine!

We can’t do this without you. Veterans Count was founded to support the families of our deployed service members. The program has evolved to meet the needs of our veterans, service members, and their families and we strive to deliver the best possible care to our veterans in a setting that is convenient to them. Help us ensure that we’re able to bring all of our resources to where they’re needed most. Please visit www.vetscount.org/maine to learn how you can support our life changing programs.
